The natural sweetener brand, Total Sweet Xylitol, has announced a new partnership to support green projects in Madagascar. Building on previous work, which has seen the brand help plant more than 60,000 trees, Total Sweet Xylitol is working with SEED Madagascar to support the charity with an initiative called Project Ala (which means ‘forest’ in Malagasy). Madagascar is hugely important for animals and plants, with over 90 per cent of those found there present nowhere else on Earth, including many species of lemur. Unfortunately, lemurs, and many other plant and animal species on Madagascar, are in serious decline, with deforestation being one of the major reasons.
Deforestation has meant that what forest is left has become fragmented, isolating lemurs and limiting their breeding opportunities. Project Ala aims to plant tree corridors between some of these segmented pieces of forest and thus allow lemurs, and other wildlife, to move more freely again and hopefully breed and increase in numbers.
Total Sweet is sponsoring the tree nursery for Project Ala, where seeds and saplings will be grown and nurtured until they are big enough to be planted out to create the corridors. The nurseries will also act as classrooms for local people, to teach them about the project and the importance of preserving the flora and fauna of the island.
Daniel Reeds, Director, commented: “We’re really proud to be involved in this project. Total Sweet is made from sustainable European birch and beech wood and so nature is at the heart of everything we do. Without trees, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do and so we want to do our bit to thank the planet that gives them to us.”
